历年考研英语作文有两类，一个大作文一个小作文。其中的小作文，多是辞职信、道歉信、感谢信等应用文体，它的形式是给出提示要点，要求考生根据要求表达清楚要点。它的评分重点在于信息点的覆盖，内容的组织，语言的准确性，格式及语域的恰当性。鉴于小作文不需要华丽的词藻和吸引阅卷人眼球的文采，跨考教育英语教研室张老师认为，只要掌握一定的方法技巧，在格式、语言和要点等方面下足功夫，拿到理想的分数还是不难，但是学生的书信写作还存在诸多问题。
第一，格式上的错误。书信的称呼，正确的格式应该是“Dear …,”，而很多考生不用Dear，而且一般都是写成“Dear…:”。另外，在考研英语写作中不需要写日期，最后书信的落款是“Li Ming”，而不是自己的姓名。考生不注意书信的格式，后果就是扣分严重。
