The EU Border Agency said in August this year, more than 150000 refugees flocked into the European Union,and the accumulative number of refugees flocking into EU this year is more than 500000.Although in the past 10 months,the number of refugees increased steadily,EU leaders responded slowly. So the EU immigration affair commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said it was the worst refugee crisis in Europe since world war II.
These refugees are mainly from the Middle East and north Africa,such as Syria,Libya.As the main sea portals,Greece and Italy burden tremendous pressure of refugee settlement first and foremost.The number of refugees flocking into Greece is around 0.16million and that of Italy is 0.104 million.According to the statistics published by the United Nation Human Rights Council, the EU countries have received 437384 asylum application from January to July this year.UNHRC also reported that during this period,the number of asylum application,which is188486, received by Germany is far more than that of other countries.Then followed by Hungary,which received 65415 application.The third one is Sweden,whose number of application is 33234.Italy and France separately received 30223 and 29832asylum application,ranking fourth and fifth.
Many refugees fled from Syria’s civil war, ISIS and entered EU by
traveling through Greece.This year there were 258365 refugees taking boats to Greece after arriving in Turkey.Other refugees tried to arrive in Italy by traveling through Greece,or reach Austria by passing through Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia,Slovenia.An increasing popular route to get to Schengen Area is leaving for Norway via Russia and Lebanon.
Most refugees from Africa came into EU by passing through Italy and Spain.Once they arrive in Italy,many of them will apply for asylum here but there are still some people trying to cross into France.Plenty of people also tried going through the dangerous intersection of Channel Tunnel to reach UK.
Refugees distributed very unevenly among 28 countries of EU.Most refugees tried to go to rich country who has generous immigration policies such as Germany, Sweden, while many eastern European countries refused to accept any refugees.
A majority of refugees attempted to get to Schengen Area. In this 26 Schengen States with no border control,they can enter and leave freely. After arriving in Schengen Area , they passed through Macedonia and Serbia into Hungary. Then many of them continued to head for richer country. Besides,some refugees started from Turkey and passed through Bulgaria and Romania to reach Hungary.
Jean-claude Juncker, the president of European commission, announced the plan of accommodating 16000 refugees in EU in the
annual state of union address.The plan included every country implementing refugee quota.Despite it was criticized by many countries,but still got approved by European parliament.Eastern European countries strongly opposed quotas,which led to Jean-claude Juncker’s insinuation of cutting their EU funding if they continue to refuse accepting refugees.However, some western European countries adopted positive policy towards refugees settlement,such as Germany, Netherlands. Germany's welcome to European refugees has won international applause. The nation has been regarded as a moral model for Europe, with its Chancellor Angela Merkel called the "mother of all refugees." Compared with other European countries that are reluctant to absorb the displaced, Germany's attitude, indeed, deserves compliments. The Dutch government has reached an agreement on the Netherlands' efforts to address the current refugee issue, State Secretary Klaas Dijkhoff of the Ministry of Security and Justice said in The Hague on Tuesday.In the short term, the government will agree to a distribution of refugees across European countries and the Netherlands accepts that thousands of additional migrants, possibly 7,000 to 9,000, will arrive in
the country on the condition that all European countries participate.(the Xinhua News Agency,September9,2015)
In my opinion,there are three main reasons causing this large-scale influx of refugees in EU.
First of all,the continuous turmoils in west Asia and north Africa triggered the emergency of large number of refugees.
Western countries tried to stable political situation of Iraq, Afghanistan,etc. However,it didn’t work.Instability of the Middle East induced by the Iraq’s turbulent situation as well as the expansion of the Islamic countries caused the influx of refugees.
Taking Libya as a example.During the rule of Qaddafi,Libya signed a contract with European countries,working jointly to combat refugees’ illegal immigration.However,western gross interference in Libya overthrew the regime of Qaddafi,which led to Libya lacking the central government.So Libya couldn’t prevent the African refugees from passing through Libya to enter EU.
Lasting more than 4 years,the conflict put Libya into grave humanitarian disaster.The war and chaos not only took away Syrian people’s lives and destroyed their houses,but also weakened their confidence of continuing living here because of depressed economy,inflation and high employment rate caused by the war.
Secondly,smugglers pushed development of refugees crisis.During the
period of the influx,it existed incredible professional human trafficking activity.Smugglers organized and transported the refugees.Under the support of fast-developing high technology,smugglers already knew how to use smart phone and other electronic appliance to guide refugees,such as tell them where to go,what they should do.
Thirdly, refugees prefer EU because of its geographical location and economic factors.
