Many children would start school hungry without breakfast clubs, teachers have claimed. A new survey suggests these clubs are the only way many students can get a meal before lessons.

About 54% of the 552 school staff questioned by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) said their school provides a breakfast club for pupils. The biggest reason for them to attend these clubs is that their parents or carer goes to work early, cited by 76.8% of those questioned.

About 22.6% said children attended due to lack of money at home because parents or carers are unemployed and 15.2% said lack of money at home due to changes or cuts to benefits.

About 17.6% said pupils mainly attend breakfast clubs to socialize.

The survey found that teachers believe that offering breakfast to pupils often helps improve their concentration and ability to learn. One primary school teacher said: “Although there is a charge for our breakfast club, we have accessed funding for those pupils on free school meals and the breakfast club had an effect on their attendance, concentration and being in school for the start of lessons. ATL general secretary Dr Roper said a nutritious meal at the start of the day has a huge impact on pupils‟ ability to learn. “Many schools do everything they can to ensure children eat well during school term-time. But there are many children living in poverty, who we fear won‟t be getting a decent meal a day in the holidays and this is something the government needs to address,” she said. A Department for Education spokesman said: “We know how important it is for children to have a good breakfast. We want schools and local authorities to use their budgets to best meet the needs of their children. Many provide breakfast clubs which offer a free meal to children from poorer families. The Pupil Premium, which will double to £ 2.5 billion in 2014-2015, targets extra money to help schools to provide support such as this to the most disadvantaged children. The free school meal scheme also ensures that these children have access to a nutritious lunch every day.

1. How many factors are mentioned which can account for the popularity of breakfast clubs? A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.

2. The pupil Premium and the free school meal scheme are mentioned in order to show_____. A. many efforts are made to provide a good and free meal B. breakfast clubs play a key role in children‟s growth C. every child should get access to a nutritious meal D. many schools can‟t offer a good and free meal to children

3. In which part of a magazine can we probably read this passage? A. Entertainment. B. Education. C. Health. D. Culture.

Art is considered by many people to be no more than a decorative(装饰)means of giving pleasure. This is not always the case, however; at times, art may be seen to have a purely functional side as well. Such could be said of the sandpaintings of the Navaho Indians of the American Southwest; these have a medicinal as well as an artistic purpose.

According to Navaho traditions, one who suffers from either a mental or a physical illness has in some way disturbed or get in touch with the supernatural -- perhaps a certain animal, a ghost, or the dead. To break away from this, the sick person or one of his relatives will employ a medical man called a “singer” to perform a curing ceremony which will attract a powerful supernatural being. During the ceremony, which may last from 2 to 9 days, the “singer” will produce a sandpainting on the floor. On the last day of the ceremony, the patient will sit on this sandpainting and the “singer” will rub the. sick or injured parts of the patient‟s body with sand from a specific figure in the sandpainting. In this way the patient absorbs the power of that particular supernatural being and becomes strong. After the ceremony, the sandpainting is destroyed so its power won‟t harm anyone.

The art of sandpainting is handed down from old “singers”. The materials used are easily found where the Navaho settle: brown, red, yellow, and white sandstone, which is ground(研磨)much as corn is made into flour. The “singer” holds a small amount of this sand in his hand and lets it flow between his fingers onto a clean, flat surface on the floor, with a steady hand and great patience. He is thus able to create designs of stylized people, snakes and other creatures that have power in the Navaho belief system. The traditional Navaho doesn‟t allow copying sandpaintings, since he believes the supernatural powers that taught him the craft have forbidden this; however, such reproductions can in fact be purchased today in tourist shops in Arizona and New Mexico. These are done by either Navaho Indians or by other people who wish to preserve this craft. 4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A.The Navaho Indians B. The Navaho Sandpaintings

C.Functions of Art D. The Ancient “Singer” 5.How did the “singer” treat the patient according to the passage? A.By passing his supernatural power on to the patient. B.By applying a magic substance to the patient‟s body.

C.By rubbing the patient‟s sick parts with sand from a sandpainting figure. D.By destroying the sandpainting figure.

6.The traditional Navaho does not allow copying of sandpaintings because _________. A.anything copied has no effect B.the craft only belongs to the supernatural

C.the copying may do harm to other Navahos D.it‟s against Navaho belief system 7.That the reproductions of sandpaintings are now commercially available shows _________. A.people have realized the artistic value of sandpaintings

B.patients have benefited from the powerful effect of sandpaintings C.more people have come to believe in supernatural power

D.modern technology has helped the production of sandpaintings

Water runs downhill from mountaintops to streams to rivers to oceans. But downhill isn‟t the only way that water moves. A new study measures how water travels from country to country for human consumption. This flow isn‟t the type we usually think about. These scientists looked at the water used to grow and make the products which get shipped from nation to nation as imports or exports. They call this a flow of“virtual water(虚拟水)”.

We typically think about water as the liquid that flows from a tap. However, 92% of the water used by people goes into growing crops, according to water researcher Arjen Hoekstra. He recently studied the hidden travels of virtual water used in products made from things like crops and meats. These products are shipped around the world.

For example, consider a sugary soft drink. Hoekstra estimated that to produce one half-liter of the drink requires between 170 and 310 liters of the water—about 95%—is used to grow and process the ingredients(原料). Another 4% goes into the packaging and labeling. In Hoekstra‟s calculation, when one country produces a half-liter of soda and sells it abroad,it exports as much virtual water as would fill a large refrigerator.

According to Hoekstra‟s new report, dry countries like Israel and Kuwait, both in the Middle East, get the majority of their virtual water from other countries, through imported products. More surprisingly, some wetter countries, like the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, also get the majority of their virtual water from other places. That means that most of the water used to grow or produce the products and food consumed in those countries came from other countries.

In the United States most of the virtual water used comes from American sources. In China even less of the water associated with its products 8. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Crops and Virtual Water B. Import and Export of Water C. Water‟s worldwide travels D. Benefits of Virtual Water

9.The example of a sugary soft drink in Paragraph 3 is given to show_________. A. how drinks are made B. how drinks are shipped C. how virtual water is exported D. how virtual water is used

10. In which countries does most part of virtual water come from outside?

A. lsrael and America B. Kuwait and the Netherlands C. China and the United Kingdom D. America and the Netherlands 11. The passage is most probably a_________.

A. science news report B. book review C. newspaper advertisement D. science fiction story

New crime prediction software should reduce not only the murder rate, but the rate of other crimes. Developed by Richard Berk, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, the software has already used in Baltimore and Philadelphia to predict which individuals on probation(缓刑) or parole(假释) are most likely to murder and to be murdered.

“When a person goes on probation or parole he is supervised(监督) by an officer. The question is „what level of supervision is appropriate?’” said Berk. It used to be that parole officers used the person‟s criminal record, and their judgment to make decisions.

“This research replaces those seat-of-the –pants calculations,” he said.

Technology helps determine level of supervision. On average there is one murder for every 100,000 people. Even among high-risk groups the murder rate is one in 100. Predicting such a rare event is very difficult, but advances in computer technology works.

Years ago, the researchers made a dataset of more than 60,000 various crimes. Using the software they developed, they found some much more likely to commit murder when paroled or probated. They could identify eight future murderers out of 100.

Berk‟s software examines roughly two dozen variables(可变因素), from criminal record to geographic location. The type of crimes, and more importantly, the age at which that crime was committed, were two of the most predictive variables.

“People assume that if someone murdered then they will murder in the future,” said Berk. “ What really matters is what that person did as a young individual. Predicting future crimes sounds well. But we aren‟t anywhere near being able to do that.”

“Berk‟s scientific answer leaves policymakers with difficult questions. By labeling one group of people as high risk, and supervise them closely, there should be fewer murders, which the potential victims should be happy about. It also means that those high-risk individuals will be supervised more aggressively. For human rights advocates, that means punishing people who, most likely, will not commit a crime in the future,” said Bushway. “It comes down to a question of whether you would rather make these errors or those errors.”

12. The underlined words(in Para.3) probably mean___. A. calculations based on widespread voting

B. calculations based on subjective opinions C. calculations made by advanced technology D. calculations based on serious considering 13. From Para 7, we can infer that______.

A. the technology would not be widely accepted in the short term

B. the technology developed by Richard Berk will soon be widely used in the US C. whether a person murders or not is largely decided by his upbringing while young D. if a person murdered when he was fifty, he is sure to murder again while on probation 14. Bushway’s attitude to the technology put forward by Richard Berk is ____. A. positive B. negative C. objective D. indifferent 15. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Closely Supervise Potential Murders B. Measures Taken to Prevent Criminal Behavior C. Software is Developed to Predict Criminal Behavior D. Technology Revolutionizes Judges‟ Way of Working
